Day 01:
Arrive in New Delhi- the national capital of the Republic of India, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. From “Indraprastha” to “Shahjahanabad” to New Delhi, it was established and destroyed over seven times. Our representative will receive you at the airport / train station. Transfer to the hotel. Depending upon the available time, perform sightseeing in New Delhi.

Day 02:
After breakfast, explore New Delhi further. Visit the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites- the Qutab Minar; Humayun’s tomb and the Red Fort. See the India Gate- the famous war memorial. Visit the Lotus temple- New Delhi’s answer to Sydney’s Opera house. Drive past the administrative blocks, the Parliament house, and the Rashtrapati Bhawan- residence of the President of India. Stroll in the world famous Chandni Chowk and try some street delicacies. Explore the Old or the Walled City further.

Day 03:
After breakfast, time will be free in Delhi before transferring to the train station to board the overnight sleeper train to Khajuraho.

Day 04:
Arrive in Khajuraho early in the morning. Check into the hotel. After breakfast, explore the little town famous the world over as a UNESCO world heritage site for 1100 years old Hindu temples. Khajuraho has always remained tucked away from the main stream events of history. This is probably why the famed temples escaped the ravages of invaders. The origin of these temples is agreed between 950 A.D. and 1050 A.D. and that they numbered no fewer than 85. Today only 22 temples are in a good, preserved state. The outer walls of the temples depict erotic sculptures and carvings from the Indian art of love. There are several stories associated with these sculptures which would be shared with you on the tour.
Visit two groups of the temples out of the Eastern, Western and the Southern group of temples. In the evening, become a witness to the magnificent sound and light show (weather permitting).

Day 05:
After breakfast, explore the little town further by visiting the two more groups of temples. Later, time will be free before transferring to the train station to board the overnight sleeper train to Varanasi.

Day 06:
Arrive in Varanasi by late morning. Varanasi (Benares/Banaras) - the holy land; the hub of spirituality; a gateway to salvation and a place revered by the Hindus and the Buddhists on the banks of the holiest river in India- the Ganges. It is also amongst the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world- older than the Buddha himself. Transfer to the hotel. Attend the beautifully illuminated and magical ritual of the Ganga Aarti in the evening.

Day 07:
If the weather permits, take an early morning boat ride in the Ganges- feast the eyes on the magnificent views of the Sun rise, and the several ghats (bathing / access points to the river). Sail from ghat to ghat and see the ghats famous for bathing, rituals and for cremation- the last destination before a person exits the World. Have a completely relaxed day on the banks of the holiest river in India. Participate in various rituals, ceremonies and activities. Explore the city- visit the Bharat Mata Temple, Tulsi Manas Mandir, Kashi Vishwanath Mandir, Sankat Mochan Mandir, and Banaras Hindu University which has an Art Gallery and the Mosque of Moghul Emperor Aurangzeb and more.

Day 08:
Today, take an excursion to Sarnath- the buried Buddhist city which was the site of a deer park where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon; a UNESCO world heritage site. Sarnath was a renowned school of learning from the 6th century B.C to 12th century A.D. If weather and other factors permit, visit the nearby monastery. Later, transfer to the train station in the evening to board the overnight train to Agra.

Day 09:
Arrive in the heritage city of Agra. Check into the hotel. After breakfast, visit the Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This will be followed by the magnificent Taj Mahal- a symbol of eternal love, poetry carved in white marble, a UNESCO world heritage site and a wonder of the world. Spend time feasting the eyes on the beauty of one of the most beautiful manmade structures as the Taj Mahal is only 10% seeing; the remaining 90% is simply feeling.

Day 10:
Check out of the hotel in Agra and transfer to Delhi. Arrive in Delhi and transfer to the airport / train station for onward journey.
The tour concludes.

 

Please note- This travel program can be taken with intercity air travel instead of trains, or partly in trains and partly by air, as the guests may prefer. This would change the total duration of the tour, as a consequence.
